Lieutenant Risto Dayan
Chief of Tactical/Security
Appearance:
Appearing to be in her late twenties or early thirties in Terran years, Dayan is 5' 7 inches tall, lean, and femininely muscular with cute Bajoran nose wrinkles on the bridge of her nose. She has long brown hair that she usually wears pulled back in a long braid. She has shining green eyes that sparkle when she laughs, which isn't very often. There is a silver traditional Bajoran earring dangling from her left ear.

Character Personality:
Dayan is brusque when introduced to strangers. She has a natural tendency to hold people at arm's length. It is usually only the people who make an effort to break through that tough exterior that Dayan thinks are worth making friends with. She has a rather dry sense of humor. Dayan has the usual Bajoran wariness of all things Cardassian. She is extremely devoted to the Bajoran religion, but does not let it interfere with her duties. She believes herself to be ordained by the Prophets to be a protector of the defenseless. This Prophetic destiny, as she sees it, motivates her, and was partially the reason she decided to join Starfleet. She does have a soft side, but rarely lets it show in public. While planet side, she usually is found temporarily owning numerous soft, furry creatures who she'd rescue from various tenuous situations. In her free time, Dayan enjoys sparring in the holosuites using weapons that would ordinarily be unfamiliar to her.
Family:
Risto Tevan, father, deceased. Former Journeyman Woodworker. Risto Indla, mother, deceased. Former Horticulturist. Dayan had no siblings. All extended family ties were severed by death during Cardassian Occupation of Bajor, save one, an elderly aunt, Vedek Wisdyn Taney.
Background:
Dayan is just the right age (exactly how old, even she doesn't know) to have her earliest memories be that of the Cardassian occupation of Bajor. She has the typical Bajoran story, orphaned at a young age at the hands of the Cardassian Occupying Force. Her childhood memories are spotty at best, she has been told that she has suppressed most of them herself, but rather than endure treatment to dig them back up, she very adamantly has decided to keep her emotional calluses firmly in place... despite the fact that she was warned this may lead to physical problems for her later in life. Dayan doesn't like talking about her childhood and the few memories she does have, and tries hard to put it all far far behind her.
On the other hand, she did join the Bajoran Resistance as a young teenager, and that she is proud of. It was there she learned tactical skills and how to defend herself, weapons and weapons systems, how to pilot various alien vessels and various sundry other sometimes "terrorist" activities. She eventually gained the respect of her peers to make the Freedom Fighter equivalent of squad leader, commanding a group of 20 (sometimes more, sometimes less) fighters against the Cardassians.
A few years after the Occupation, Dayan left Bajor to explore the galaxy... or more accurately, wander purposelessly. She spent quite a bit of time aimlessly roaming the corridors of Deep Space Nine before finally landing a job on a civilian Terran freighter. She found the work rather dull, but was excited at the Terran's frequent discussion of Starfleet. The academy system intrigued her.
Upon completion of her tour of duty on the freighter, she hitched a ride to Earth to sign up at the Academy. Upon reaching San Francisco, she was surprised to learn of all the "hoops" she'd have to jump through in order to be accepted. She had assumed she'd just join right up, after all, that's how she joined the Resistance... After days and days of tests and near-intolerable scrutiny by numerous officials, she finally got word that she'd been accepted, and was expected to do exceptionally well. Dayan lived up to those expectations, finally graduating near the top of her class in 2379.
Not surprisingly, her best subjects tended to be the physical and strategy related courses, hand to hand combat tactics, weapons training, strategies of warfare, and the like. She also was an excellent pilot, and had relished the opportunity to learn new, cutting edge flight systems and tactical techniques. Her advisor and mentor at the Academy expected her to make a fine start as a Security Officer, then be promoted to Tactical, and eventually maybe even make the Command Line.
