Character History:
2215 - 2299: Khalidah bint Ma'ed was born to her parents Ma'ed Tariq and Rabiha Noor. The third of five children, and first to be born on Sol, Khali - as her family called her- often found herself trapped between the dreams of her mother and the bone-rigid traditions of her father - beliefs that had been fostered on his home planet of El-Auria and nurtured within the Arabic community to which he had traveled with his young family. Despite his protestations, Khali received a good education at her mother's insistence, traveling abroad to boarding schools in Switzerland and Great Britain.
At age 19, Khali was called home to fulfill what her father saw as her greatest duty - marriage to a man of his choosing. The jointure would provide great wealth for the Tariq clan, and even though the groom - one Ibin al Rahid - was predominately Terran, he bore at least a quarter of the El Aurian blood shared by the family; in Ma'ed's eyes, this made him worthy of consideration. Thus, he was enraged when Khali refused to cooperate - even going so far as to threaten starving herself if her father did not call off the wedding. Where Ma'ed saw power and prestige, his daughter saw the truth - a vain, sadistic man who had already driven one wife to an early death by suicide. In the end, nothing she did would change her father's mind and it was only through the determination of her youngest sister Meri, and the unexpected help of a distant cousin and her sympathetic husband, that Khali escaped her father's home and the dreaded threat of marriage.
Essentially orphaned at age 20 - returning home would mean death or worse - Khali made the decision to start life over. Taking the name Johara Noor - in honor of an aunt who had likewise cheated fate - she set out into the world determined to make the best of her new-found freedom.Throughout her pilgrimage, Johara acquired an extended education of sorts in counseling, stopping a few years here, a couple months there, to study courses until she had a highly varied resume of experience to call her own. She took this with her as she arrived in San Francisco and the home of the Federation's Starfleet Academy. Her application as a cadet was accepted in 2300, and Johara took her first large step towards a completely new career.
2317 - 2373: Johara's return to Earth was a period of slowing down and regaining her bearings. While serving as a counselor and a liaison within the UFP, she found time to extend her education, earning PhD's in various counseling fields. Her internships took her into various regions, particularly Bajor. Here Johara's heart broke repeatedly as she worked with adults and, in particular, children who managed either to escape or be released from Cardassian internment camps. Resigning her post with Starfleet, Johara took a sabbatical of sorts to devote her time to this cause before the outbreak of the Dominion war called her back into service.
2373 - 2380: Her service during the Dominion war earned Johara a promotion to full Lieutenant before she returned once more to her planet-based position. This time she focused on counseling issues within the Academy itself, removing personnel and introducing new faces.
2381 - 2383: With matters well in hand and a capable replacement waiting to take her place, Johara made the decision in 2381 to head for DS5, a station at the far edge of the galaxy that was requesting an assistant counselor. Thus, handing over her position to her successor, she packed her bags and headed for the stars once more. Her stint on the base was soon upgraded to serve as Head of Counseling. In that time she accquired not only a thriving practice - but an adopted family as well in the form of two children - Toby and Gina Criller - and a tentative romantic relationship with their uncle, Musa Sahro. It seemed that this position would prove Johara's settling point until - in 2384 - family crises combined with an oncoming threat to the station required that Johara once more step down.
2383 - Present: Not one to stay on the sidelines for long, Johara was once again called up to duty. Leaving her adopted children in the secure care of her own relatives, she accepted yet another position as Chief Counselor - this one on board a Nebula cruiser known as the Hiroshima.
